I had grand plans for today and am generally failing at all of them. Whoops.

As far as NaNo goes, I was all revved up for my planned project, and then I've woken up with my brain going: "Okay, but why not write this other idea I've just come with instead?"

Gnarg, hate it when this happens.

I guess, lol. Maybe if I start it I'll procrastinate on it with the original plan?

I figure that if I'm inspired to write something, I'm not wasting that feeling. Even if I'm supposed to be working on something else.

Which is how I have a dozen stories that are basically fan fic of my main story, but I've only written 6 actual chapters. Maybe I give bad advice.

I've got so many pieces of stories. XD I'll probably end up splitting my word count though, I always do. (I can do the "If the muse doesn't turn up, start without them," thing, but I need to work in the genre I feel like working in, otherwise by the time he turns up six hours late with Starbuck's the place is on fire.)

I can do that, but I'm not certain it's a good idea for me. If I force it too much, the writing is rubbish and it'll spend longer editing than it would take too write in the first place. It comes down to whether I'm not writing cause I'm not inspired, or I'm not writing cause I can't put myself into the protagonist's head space (I write close third person). If it's the former, I force it. If it's the latter, I wait.

The worst for me is that I regularly switch POV and I can take days of nothing to get between the headspaces of the various characters. Even now, I'm editing Raine's chapter and it just sounds like Eliza...

Oh, yeah, that's understandable; rewriting the POV is a pest.

I have a bugbear with which characters want to be written too. That's kinda what's happening to me here - I woke up this morning with a very clear scene involving a specific character, and now it's as though he's hanging off my apron strings like a little kid, going: "but you wanna write me, right?" (Yeah, honey, I do, but get in line. Nope, further back. Further. Fuuuurrrther).

The only way to get a story out of my head is to write it. I'd write the poor fellow a few hundred words that covers the main character/plot beats he needs told, and promise him that you'll fill in the rest when you find time. Otherwise he'll never be satisfied.

I had a horrifying moment of realisation that it could work as the third instalment of the series, but the NaNo novel is the first book.

This is not okay. I know some people can write three novels simultaneously, but I'm not one of them.

I think I'm safer than you since my ideas arrive in drabble to chapter length, not novel sized.

I usually start out with just a scene, but then even if I write it down my brain keeps going "...And then?", like the lady at the Chinese drive-thru in Dude, Where's my Car?

Lol, that sounds like a great problem to have! I'm the opposite. I get a complete scene, and then it's done, and I'm left thinking "a chapter requires more than 300 words..."
